Public and First Nations engagement on killer whales

Department of Fisheries and Oceans

Alan planned and facilitated engagement for DFO to seek input on the recovery strategy for northern and southern resident killer whales. Alan facilitated a series of four public meetings on Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland and assisted with five First Nations meetings.

An online response form was developed to gather input from broader audiences unable to attend the meetings. Alan assisted in the development of various communications tools used at the meetings. Results were analyzed, summarized and documented in a consultation report.

Public and indigenous interest in this species at risk was very high and issue topics ranged from whale watching, commercial shipping, and recreational fishing to conservation and academic research.
